Manchester based singer-songwriter Catherine Burgis has been turning heads with her new electronic solo project Test Card Girl. Her sound offers a unique combination of the warming and natural tones of Indie-Folk and the bright, interplaying melodies of electro-pop, creating a blend which has been described as “life-affirming” by BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson.

Her recent release ‘Fly’, mixed by Seadna Mcphail and mastered by Graeme Lynch at Two Zero Nine Mastering, is an expressive production filled with ethereal vocal layers and an eclectic instrumentation. Vibrant string stabs dance around dense electro pulses that radiate an audible freedom so that you never quite know where the song is turning next. Catherine’s lead vocals have such a crisp tone that they almost feel like another leading part of the string section while her backing vocals are perfectly balanced to bring a blissful abstract texture underneath the track.

Like with her previous singles, ‘Fly’ has lit up the national music scene and earned big praise from Elbow’s Guy Garvey, Radio X’s John Kennedy and BBC 6 Music’s Marc Riley as well as featuring on Spotiy’s ‘Easy’ editorial playlist. Last year Test Card Girl was named as one of Steve Lamacq’s Ones To Watch and it seems like the acclaimed DJ’s ability for sourcing the best new talent was accurate once again as she has just been selected for the Glastonbury 2022 longlist. She can also be found playing live at Sounds From The Other City and Manchester International Festival in the coming weeks.
